With umbrella, charm and supercars: report The Aurora – a Nordic competition

The Pebble Beach, Amelia Island and Concorso d’Eleganza events are considered the most exclusive motoring events in the world. The Nordic competition ‘the Aurora’ in Bastad, Sweden also wants to join this series. The first attempt leaves you wanting more and hoping for a sunny 2025.

The most spectacular motoring event of the year takes place every year in the third week of August at exclusive Pebble Beach on the Pacific coast of California. It is more exclusive and even more atmospheric on Lake Como when the beautiful and rich classical music lovers meet at the Concorso d’Eleganza at Villa d’Este in late spring. “The Aurora – a Scandinavian Concours” wants to present itself as more modern, fresher and no less exciting in Bastad in southern Sweden. The dream location called ‘Norrvikens Trädgardar’ is presented as a must-see plant garden that has made a name for itself beyond the country’s borders for exclusive events and luxury weddings. The beautiful mansion with its impressively maintained park looks even more elite than it already is thanks to almost 100 vehicles, divided into classic millionaires, must-see luxury models and powerful supercars. Aurora wants to be different: more modern, younger and therefore more desirable to young car enthusiasts, without scaring away classic collectors.

Weather – good

But a leisurely stroll among flower beds and apple trees shows that million-dollar Koenigsegg cars, Zagato creations or… Porsche 918 racers of a more modern vintage find much more space and interest than the pre-war Bentley, Iso Rivolta, Alfa Romeo or Mercedes models, which can also be admired at the Norrvikens location in the interplay between light, shadow and rain. Accordingly, the audience is younger, forgoing the usually obligatory straw hats and dark blue double jackets and, after arriving in their own sports car, inevitably opting to grab a protective umbrella. The Swedish As we all know, summer has its pitfalls, but where in? Europe Has there been steady or even summer weather in recent weeks? Aurora’s roughly 6,000 visitors are marginally bothered by this — they’re prepared for the back-and-forth between sun and rain — but prefer to chat about automotive gems on green meadows and enjoy views of the coastline.

On the Pebble Beach Trail

Kids embrace beauties like the Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing, Ferrari Testarossa or a yellow BMW 507 and even make a detour to the stand the BMW presented its electric versions for the future. However, no one at the Scandinavian Concours really cares about the electric cars of tomorrow. It’s best to cheer the Ferrari F40’s engines at high speeds with applause, dream about the Mercedes 540 K in leather or discuss your own vehicle collection. The crowd is rich but not aloof and Bastad lives up to its nickname of the Swedish Riviera, at least by Scandinavian standards. The Swedish heir to the throne Carl Philip, Duke of Värmland and Prince of Sweden, will give the event a special shine as a car enthusiast, as will Christian Koenigsegg, whose supercar factory is less than 30 kilometers from Bastad. The multi-million dollar racing brand is celebrating its 30th birthday in Aurora and has been as present as Rolls-Royce with its luxury models from the 1994 Silver Spirit, in which Queen Elizabeth once traveled to Sweden, to the electric Spectre.

Champagne, lobster bisque and oysters – this is as much a part of the Aurora Concours as it is at Villa d’Este on Lake Como or Quail on Pebble Beach. You show yourself and what you’ve got – not just when it comes to cars. Luxury labels, luxury watches and precious stones shine in competition with automotive treasures and the only slightly setting midnight sun, while sweet cigar smoke rises and there is casual conversation about the ATP tennis tournament, which takes place just a few miles away for them The top players who left Wimbledon too soon had to say goodbye. After all, Bastad also sells fresh strawberries with whipped cream and almost everyone likes to grab a glass of champagne instead of the British Pimm’s. People are already looking forward to 2025 and an event in the car calendar that is a little younger and fresher than many classics.
