Commercially available tablets are generally stylish and lightweight, but are only very suitable for outdoor use to a limited extent. Other features are required there, such as robust construction, waterproof and dustproof. One tablet that wants to do it all is Samsung’s “Galaxy Tab Active5 5G” Enterprise Edition.

Anyone looking for a tablet for professional use in difficult conditions has a fairly limited choice on the market. This is especially true if the device you’re looking for isn’t too big and you can use it for phone calls like a smartphone. One device that meets these requirements is the Galaxy Tab Active5 5G from Samsung.

This ruggedized tablet, which measures 214x127x10 millimeters and weighs 433 grams, has an 8-inch display and delivers a resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 pixels, which corresponds to WUXGA. Thanks to the high pixel density of 283 DPI, the image is razor-sharp, and the brightness of up to 802 cd/m² in boost mode is also completely sufficient for working in bright sunlight. The screen usually delivers 60 Hertz, but adaptively this number doubles to 120 Hertz, which then ensures a completely continuous display of movements, for example in games or movies.

The overall gorgeous display shows 16 million colors and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5, which is not only drop-proof but also extremely scratch-resistant. It is also very touch sensitive, making it easy to use even with wet hands and even gloves.

The tablet has a durable and tight rubber case, which also houses the very durable Samsung S-Pen. The tablet can be used with or without the case, with increased drop protection from 1.5 to 1.8 meters when using the case. And since, as I said, the pen is also in the case, most users will probably always use the tablet with the case.

As a fully outdoor device for use in harsh conditions, the active5 and the S-Pen are protected against both dust and water according to the IP68 specification. Specifically, the tablet can withstand being submerged in 1.5 meters of water for 30 minutes. In addition, the active5 is also certified according to the military standard MIL-STD-810H. This in turn ensures that the tablet can withstand shocks, vibrations and impacts, works well at different altitudes and can also withstand the salt spray that can come out of a boat during maritime use, for example.

The back panel of the tablet is plugged in and can be removed in a flash. Behind it is a replaceable battery with a capacity of 5050 mAh, which gives the tablet a very good battery life of 11 hours and 46 minutes. Normally, the tablet is charged via USB-C using the included charger, but there is also a pogo pin to connect the device to a corresponding charging dock and charge it. For longer use without access to a socket you can buy additional batteries currently from Samsung cost less than 50 euros online. Alternatively, you can also use a power bank connected to the Active5’s USB-C port. Unfortunately, it only supports USB 2.0.
