Digital sustainability reduces the CO2 burden

Digitization in factories often also has a dark side in terms of climate protection: without a sustainable approach, it can lead to an increase in CO2 emissions.

Digital processes typically require significant amounts of energy. The association SEF Smart Electronic Factory eV recently explained in a statement why a sustainable digitization strategy is necessary and how digital solutions can reduce energy consumption and reduce the cost of raw materials.

“Digitalization in industry has two sides. On the one hand, it offers significant opportunities for improving energy efficiency, but on the other hand, it can be very energy-consuming. Digitization means that more data needs to be created, processed and stored. This requires additional computing capacity and storage resources, which in turn consume more energy. The increasing use of computers, servers, data centers and other power-hungry electronic devices also plays a role here,” explained Christina Hild, CEO of Smart Electronic Factory.

Digital technologies could also increase energy consumption if not used efficiently and optimized processes are not implemented. Inefficient processes can lead to increased resource consumption. Hild continues: “To minimize the corresponding negative effects, it is therefore important to follow a sustainable digitization strategy. Digital sustainability is based on optimizing infrastructure and implementing technologies that reduce CO2trace.”

For these tasks, SEF Smart Electronic Factory develops and tests increasingly suitable solutions such as energyMonitoring and energy management. “By using intelligent control and monitoring systems, companies can achieve energy savings, better manage resources and optimize processes. The right application of digital technologies can therefore help reduce energy consumption and act more sustainably overall. In this way, the industry can make a significant contribution to resource conservation and the fight against climate change,” added Heald.

An application example in circuit board production, in which five members of the association participate with their solutions, shows how SEF promotes sustainability and energy efficiency in factories. The interaction enables optimized test procedures and image recognition when manually pressing high current contacts. The result is a significantly minimized rejection rate, which leads to a reduction in raw material and energy costs. In addition, quality increases and the complaint rate improves. There will also be a reduction in energy consumption as returns and reshipments of goods are reduced.

“Sustainable action benefits us all. “Not only from the point of view of our planet, but also from the point of view of competitiveness and profitability of companies,” explained Hild.
