Sara, the Ryanair stewardess, explains: “Passengers should simply spend a lot of money!”

Everyone is for climate protection. So: theoretically. So: soon. So: at the latest when the summer holidays are over. Until then: free flights for free citizens.

The 2024 travel analysis confirms the impression: for the first time, the plane has a larger share in the choice of means of transport than the car, with 46.8% against 41%, including campers and caravans. The most popular foreign travel destination is Spain (14.4%). Long-distance travel reached a record high of 9.3%. Particularly popular: the Caribbean, Maldives, Thailand and Vietnam.

Making a lot of money with little money: the Ryanair system

Personally, I had my own experience with a cheap flight a few years ago. Parking at the airport was three times more expensive than an international return ticket. This makes you think a bit. By the way, almost one in five holidaymakers flies to the Canary Islands with Ryanair.

The first concerns the “Ryanair system” – and promises a look at the “tricks of the low-cost airline”. From Bordeaux in London? 15 euros. From Marseille to Brussels? 17 euros. From Berlin to the Canary Islands? Less than 20 euros.

It seems devastating for a company. Yet Ryanair is considered the most profitable airline Europe. Net profit 2023: 1.4 billion euros. Making a lot of money with little money? He is trying to understand how it works ARD– to process the report.

“Passengers should just spend a lot of money!”

Take former flight attendant Sara. She assures that the sale of additional services should start already ten minutes after takeoff: “meal” vouchers at the on-board rate – a kind of McDonald’s above the clouds. “Passengers should simply spend a lot of money,” says Sara.

Cabin manager Felipe adds that “very good salespeople” have excellent opportunities for advancement. And good sales are transparent. This puts pressure on the staff. Each crew member records their own personal paragraph. Individual specifications must be met. Smileys glow for good salespeople. If someone misses the mark, the corners of their mouths turn down.

In this way Ryanair not only creates transparency. But also competition between crew members.

Short on customers? What a dream!

This puts pressure on the staff. Right after dinner, the catalog with gifts arrives. And then there are the scratch cards: a lottery where you can win bags, tablets or trips.

The situation is a dream. So: for a company. When do you tie your target group to a chair and can work with them intensively without any possibility of escape?

From 1200 to 2000 euros net: employees also pay

Former employees also feel trapped in the system. Depending on the country, employees earn 1,200 to 2,000 euros net, says Erste. The basic equipment of the uniform is included. But if you have to replace parts, you pay.

And when winter comes, it costs 61.45 euros more. Because the Ryanair winter jacket is mandatory in service. And in any case you have to finance it yourself. “You quickly become a customer of your own employer,” observes a former employee.

“Fear works great,” says Ryanair boss

Boss Michael O’Leary talks about the “human factor” during a public appearance at a university: “Fear works great,” he reveals when asked about employee motivation. “Terrorizing people is often the most effective form of motivation.”

The airline’s boss is always good with concise words. For example, he presented a general settlement with O’Leary for the legal dispute following the closure of the Marseille plant in southern France France commented:

“You French want to lock yourselves in a wall – to keep the same shitty productivity and the same shitty unions that you have had for the last ten, twenty years. This is destroying your economy. I Love France. But you can’t go to college until you’re 35, retire at 37, and expect the state to pay for it. So we’re not going to give anyone a job there.”

It is so often in life. When things are cheap, someone else pays the price. It is a good thing that we are all benefactors. So: right away, right after the holiday flight.
