IT security experts had warned of a data protection debacle caused by a new Windows search function. Now Microsoft wants to spend more time on it.

After heavy criticism, Microsoft postpones the introduction of a new Windows search function1which is supposed to save screenshots every few seconds. It was originally supposed to be available on June 18 with a new PC model. The feature, called “Recall,” will now be tested on a smaller scale in the “Windows Insider” program at a later date, Microsoft announced Thursday.

According to the company, Recall is intended to make it easier to find information on a PC. Artificial intelligence software analyzes what can be seen in the many screenshots and creates a directory. This should help, for example, if you can’t remember the name of a travel website you visited, but still know that it showed palm trees and a beach. You should be able to find the page again by searching for “palm trees and beach.”

However, some AI security researchers warned of a data protection disaster following the announcement of “Recall”.. They concluded that cyberattackers could also possibly gain access to the lists. Last week, Microsoft announced better protection for ‘recall’ data. In addition, the function should no longer be enabled by default when setting up the PC, but users should first have to activate it themselves. The criticism remained, now the postponement followed.

Microsoft and Windows computer makers plan to launch a new PC category on June 18, which will be more geared toward artificial intelligence use. The device class is called “Copilot+PC,” based on Microsoft’s AI assistant called “Copilot.”
