Ethiopian Airlines is by far the most successful airline in Africa. The Star Alliance member is outgrowing Addis Ababa Airport. But the airline’s home airport is slowly reaching its limits. That’s why a new one should be built, like the aviation portal “Airplane” he writes.
Ethiopian Airlines is building the hub itself, just outside the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa. According to Ethiopian Airlines CEO Mesfin Tasew, the project is worth about $6 billion (about 5.2 billion Swiss francs).
The new airport is scheduled to open in 2029 and will have a capacity of 60 million passengers per year in the first phase of expansion. After the final phase of construction, the airport will have space for 100 million air travelers per year. This would make it the largest airport in Africa.
With 100 million passengers handled annually, the African hub would be among the world’s largest airports. Only Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport surpassed that milestone last year.
