Here is the Asus Vivobook S 15 with Snapdragon X Elite. The test of the first AI PC

The question is: are we really ready for new laptops with generative artificial intelligence? Better yet, are these machines ready to deliver on the promises of Microsoft Copilot and generative AI in general? We tried out the Asus Vivobook S 15, one of the first notebooks to bear the Microsoft Copilot+ PC stamp and the ARM-based Snapdragon X Elite platform.

A premise before starting: the ARM architecture is in many ways similar to that of processors for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. This means high efficiency and low energy consumption. However, compared to the dominant X86 platform from AMD and Intel, applications must be “rewritten” by developers. In practice, most are already optimized, but it may happen that some have to be translated in real time, which leads to a higher load on the CPU and therefore a loss of autonomy.

Then it must be pointed out that what we have understood as performance can vary from notebook to notebook with the same processor. Therefore, each Copilot+ PC with ARM architecture could have different behavior depending on the manufacturer. Having exhausted the warnings, it must be said immediately that we are facing something new, a promising start but not a revolution. On paper, it promises higher performance than a MacBook (+65% faster than the Air M3) and very low consumption. According to the magazines that have started comparing benchmarks, it is faster than an Apple product in some situations, but the experience is less linear. Macs are less choppy. There are also advantages compared to the X86 machines, such as the ignition, which is like a tablet.

The Asus Vivobook S 15 has a battery that lasts 18 hours, barely gets warm, and never gets stressed. To be clear, this is a €1,299 device for professionals, not a workstation or even a computer for gamers.

The display is very nice: a 15.6-inch OLED, 120 Hz refresh rate, HDR and brightness up to 600 nits. The battery has a capacity of 70 Wh and can be charged at 90 W. Autonomy is its real strength. With optimized apps, consumption is very low.
