7 tips to protect your pet
July 14th, August 15th… and their traditional fireworks! For some of us, it’s a miracle. But for our animals, these sudden lights and deafening noises are a source of stress and are perceived by them as a danger to be avoided. For this reason, we see a peak in escapes during these periods.
1- Do not take him to the crime scene
Is your dog afraid of fireworks? Spare him this spectacle by keeping him at home. If he panics, he could become aggressive or run away. In fact, dogs have the reflex to run in all directions to escape danger: they can therefore travel several dozen kilometers to escape this noise. Unfortunately, they risk crossing a road and being hit by a car.
” Above all, do not take him with you when he is still a puppy: this can traumatize him. Owners mistakenly think that this will make them get used to it, but this is not true: on a leash, the dog cannot escape and is so violent that he cannot get used to it! »warns Dr. Laetitia Barlerin, veterinarian.
2- Offer him shelter
” The first thing you need to do is bring it indoors. Above all, do not restrict it to the garden. », continues the practitioner. Then allow your dog to hide… You can even help him by placing his basket in a quiet, dark place. Some feel reassured in a cupboard, others hide behind the toilet… You can also provide him with his transport cage: this closed and dark place will give him security.
The same goes for cats: “ Cats know exactly where they feel safe: let them go there and do not disturb them under any circumstances », recommends the vet.
The NACS will seek refuge in their little house. And for all the animals in the house: “ Don’t forget to close the shutters so they can’t see the light » adds Doctor Barlerin.
3- Leave him alone
If your dog is afraid, he will try to isolate himself. Make sure he is not disturbed. Avoid talking to him calmly or cuddling him: this attitude will make him believe that he is right to be worried.
Go about your job and show him that this noise is nothing to worry about.
