The port of Fowey in Cornwall could soon be named cruise ship destination of the year. The British port competes with renowned destinations such as Dubai and Kingston in Canada.
Cornish port recognised for excellence
BBC reports that organisers of the Seatrade Cruise Awards 2024 have praised the Port of Fowey’s “outstanding achievements and contributions” in attracting and servicing cruise ships. Port staff said it was “fantastic” to be in the “Destination of the yearbe one of the finalists.
In the official nomination announcement, organizers noted that Fowey’s contributions and achievements stood out from a multitude of high-quality nominations, the BBC reports. “This is a testament to the hard work, dedication and excellence in your field,” the statement read.
Organisers praise small harbour town of Fowey
The small port regularly serves as a stopover for cruise ships from all over the world. In September 2023, the “Spirit of Adventure” docked in Fowey, the longest and heaviest ship to ever dock at the idyllic port.
“This is a fantastic award for Fowey Harbour,” a harbourmaster told the BBC. Although the Cornish port is very small, Fowey prides itself on offering cruise passengers a warm welcome and unique experiences.
The winners will be announced at the Seatrade Cruise Med industry meeting in Malaga, Spain, in September 2024.
Amsterdam plans to ban cruise ships
Unlike Britain’s Fowey, tourist magnet Amsterdam wants to prevent holidaymakers from visiting the city on cruise ships in the future. The Dutch city plans to move its cruise ship passenger terminal from the city center by 2035.
In addition, starting in 2026, the number of ships allowed to dock at the terminal will be halved. The measures also include halving the number of river cruises in the city. With its decisions, the city wants to combat overtourism and improve the quality of life of its inhabitants.
