Delta secures license for hydrogen energy technology


Delta Electronics, a global provider of IoT-based smart energy systems, announced that it has signed a partnership agreement with Ceres Power. Stated objective: technology transfer and licensing in order to gain access to the portfolio for hydrogen energy stacks.

Ceres is a global provider of solid oxide fuel cells and electrochemical technology. Through this collaboration, Delta plans to integrate Ceres’ energy stack technology with its own power electronics and thermal management technology to develop solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and solid oxide electrolyte cell (SOEC) systems for hydrogen applications. These SOFC and SOEC systems are scheduled for release by the end of 2026 and will expand the capabilities of Delta’s environmentally friendly solutions in a variety of industries, including chemicals, energy, transportation, steel and others.

Therefore, they offer the best conditions for use in microgrid applications, distributed power systems, and critical facilities such as data centers, semiconductor production lines, and other advanced manufacturing operations. In addition, SOEC systems will play a key role in the chemical, utility and steel industries as they adopt green hydrogen in their production processes and operations to replace fossil fuels.”


By leveraging Ceres’ expertise in solid oxide stack technology combined with its own technology in the areas of energy and thermal management, the aim is to enrich the portfolio of infrastructure solutions, Chang continued.


Phil Caldwell, CEO of Ceres, also underlined the relevance of the partnership between the two companies: “The new partnership with Delta, a company with global expertise in mass production, power electronics and System integrationit is also of great importance to us that green hydrogen will play a critical role in shaping a safer and more sustainable energy system in the future.


In addition to licensing core energy stack technology, Delta also plans to establish a “net zero research lab” at its Tainan manufacturing complex to develop advanced zero carbon technology. In addition, the use of hydrogen energy as well as internal research and development capabilities in related application areas should be strengthened.


From 2024 to 2026, Delta plans to develop product development and integrate production lines at its Tainan facility with the support of Ceres’ engineering services. Delta also plans to expand its smart energy solutions, including microgrid applications and energy management platforms. Hydrogen energy systems will also be integrated to provide more integrated and flexible low-carbon infrastructure.


Ceres’ stack technology is the core for both SOFC and SOEC. When SOFC is used, it can efficiently produce electricity, water and heat by reacting oxygen with hydrogen or methane. The electricity generation efficiency is about 60 percent and can even reach 85 percent with a heat recovery system, which is significantly higher than the efficiency of gas-fired central power plants, which is about 40 to 50 percent a hundred. Since corresponding solid oxide fuel cells can also be manufactured near power-demanding parts, power transmission losses and other unexpected unstable factors during the transmission and distribution process can be avoided. It is therefore particularly suitable for installations that require a reliable power supply.


SOEC technology produces hydrogen up to 25 percent more efficiently than existing low-temperature solutions, especially when thermally integrated into industrial processes. Using electricity from renewable sources, the technology can produce green hydrogen, which is optimal for the decarbonization of various industries, including steel and chemical industries that want to replace fossil materials in their processes to reduce CO2-Reduce emissions.


Green hydrogen is also one of the key ingredients for the production of carbon-neutral e-fuels. Backed by carbon sequestration technology, Delta says e-fuels represent a promising alternative energy source for internal combustion engines, ships and aircraft, making a significant contribution to the transition to net zero.
