But with the 07 of the daughter of the Great Wall, Ora, you now remember the era of clones, copies and caricatures. Except that the Gran Turismo from Stuttgart is only available as a plug-in hybrid and otherwise as a pure internal combustion engine.

The Ora, on the other hand, runs purely electrically. And there’s another crucial difference: While the Porsche’s list price starts at €110,900, that of the Ora 07 ends at €53,490 – and starts at €41,990.

Not a Porsche, but a Hyundai in sight

Round headlights, flared fenders and a bulging rear end – the Porsche parallels are undeniable. And because of the oval taillights, there’s even a bit of the first Bentley Continental in there.

But Ora sees the 07 above all as a competitor to the Hyundai Ioniq 6: at 4.07m, it’s the same length as the centimeter and stands out from the mainstream at least as much as its streamlined design. And not only are the prices a little closer in this case, after all the Hyundai costs between 43,900 and 61,100 euros, but also the basic data of the movement is comparable.

The Ora 07 is offered in the basic version with a 150 kW/204 hp electric motor on the front axle. The top model has two engines with 300 kW/408 hp and also four-wheel drive.

Comfortable in the left lane

When it comes to driving, the Chinese are also closer to the Koreans than the Swabians: Yes, the steering is precise and comparatively direct by Asian standards. And on the test track at parent company Great Wall Motors’ headquarters in Baoding, the chassis is also finely tuned, absorbing bumps cleanly and giving the driver a good feel for the often-changing road surface.

But even if it accelerates like a Porsche and reaches 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds at best – the Ora 07 is not really attractive and attractive, but rather makes it easy. It takes the driver less with it and doesn’t involve them as much. In short: it’s less tempting to use natural gas – er – electricity.

Comparatively composed and drugged, he prefers long runs with lots of straights to short twisty trips in the mountains. And at full throttle at the latest, it has to let every Porsche go anyway because the electronics pull the plug at 180 km/h. Like so many cars from China, the would-be Panamera is built less to drive than to get there.

Drive for a long time, charge slowly

Although the arrival may sometimes require a bit of a wait: with battery sizes of 67 and 86 kWh, the Gran Turismo from the Far East offers a range of up to 520 km. But patience is also required at the end of the journey. Because when it comes to charging, the Chinese are slow and lazy: with 11 kW AC and up to 88 kW DC, they are among the slowest in this league. However, they also know this in Baoding and want to try to improve things as soon as possible.

Refinement for driver and passengers

On the other hand, the interior, atmosphere and equipment are impeccable: the cabin with the Porsche-borrowed center console that juts out diagonally between the seats and the instrument inlays are elegantly upholstered in imitation leather. The surfaces also feel good, and an electric motor handles almost every movement.

The cabin is also nicely lit and, with the large panoramic roof, looks more airy than it actually is with a wheelbase of 2.87 metres. In the front you sit in sports armchairs, which are air-conditioned and can be massaged if you wish. There’s a comfortable bench in the back and the boot holds 333 to 1,045 litres.

In addition, Ora provides its customers with plenty of online help, which, however, is alert to the limits of patience and therefore likes to blink and beep. There is a variety of entertainment on the large touch screen and intelligent voice control with artificial intelligence. And they even fit a head-up display as standard. Even Porsche could take an example, the Chinese are so generous.

Conclusion: An exotic for generation E

Depending on your perspective, it looks bold or outlandish, but underneath its quirky exterior it’s extremely serious Electric carwhich offers a lot of substance at an attractive price.

Unfortunately, the Ora 07 is not alone in this. And while its little brother the 03 can still score points as a tight kissing ball in the small car army, the Gran Turismo is only left with the role of an exotic model for the E generation, which could above all be negotiated as a cheap Porsche. parody.
