Are electric cars and caravans compatible?

The time is long gone when electrified cars (even hybrids twenty years ago) could not acceptclutch due safety and the durability of the structure – batteries put too much strain on everything. Now more than 50% of cars on batteries – and even 100% electric – can be equipped with a curtain. The best evidence is given elsewhere at Tesla Cybertruck capable of towing 5 tons.

At dawn holidaywe legitimately ask whether it is a good idea to drive away with your electric car (and studies show that it is becoming less of a problem) and dragging e.g. a caravan.

More abilities

What you need to know is that although it can drag, a an electric car is less capable than thermal. An example with the hot Audi Q8, which tows up to 3,493 kg compared to 1,800 for the Q8 e-tron.

Recently, the German Automobile Club (ADAC) performed the test comparison depending on the capacity of different electric models. THE upper it is structured as follows: BMW iX and Kia EV9 (2,500 kg), Tesla model Audi Q8 (1,800 kg). Of course, there are other models that can do this tow a caravan as several models offer load capacity 1,600 kg such as Tesla Model Y and S, Kia EV7, Hyundai Ioniq 6, Smart #3 and Volvo EX30.

Tow it is more so with an electric car comfortable mechanically because it doesn’t exist no gearboxwhich reduces the tension in the drive chain while the engine delivers its maximum torque from 0 rpm, which offers great flexibility. Finally, regenerative braking will improve due to the additional weight “pushing” the vehicle. Note that even for electric versions with all wheel drive are more recommended (as with thermals) for reasons of stability.

What restrictions?

So there will be electric cars better than thermals for this exercise? In reality, this is not the case it is not so according to ADAC. And for good reason: the weight of the battery, which will necessarily significantly reduce the capacity of the towed load. We’re really talking about several hundred kilos. There is a causal relationship between a vehicle’s weight and its towing capacity. In fact, on an electric car, it is necessary to create a connection between Bird (total permissible weight) a PTRA (total permissible driving weight), the values of which are closer to those of the thermal car. The result is difference between PTAC and PTRA which represents towing capacity. Again, we can take an example from the Audi Q8: the thermal version has a GVWR of 2,475 kg at a GVWR of 5,975 kg, while the electric version has a GVWR of 3,180 kg at a GVWR of 4,480 kg. The towing capacity thus increases from single to double (from 1,800 kg for the electric to 3,493 kg for the thermal). So it always pays to do the math when considering a new vehicle.

Another limitation is obvious and also concerns the batteries: the autonomy is reduced by half when towing. On the highway, it is recommended to drive at the speed of a heavy truck, or even slower. According to ADAC again, if we would exceeds 100 km/h engine consumption rises. Example with a Kia EV6 and a 1,600 kg caravan: consumption varies from 20 kWh/100 km in normal times (no load) to 36 kWh/100 km. So there will be autonomy halfor between 100 and 170 km for a fee. In total, the ADAC testers had to perform 8 recharges during the 1,281 km journey. 522 kWh. Limiting without considering the fact that it is sometimes necessary disconnect to charging stations, the infrastructure of which does not allow the caravan (space). Tip: fit low rolling resistance tires to your caravan or trailer to save a few kilometers on every load.

One last detail: let’s not forget that B permit it entitles you to drive a vehicle weighing less than 3.5 tonnes (GVW). In addition, it will therefore be necessary to have a special permit.
